Best Laptop Screen Size |How to Choose the Best One for You {Update 2022}

The best laptop screen size is the one that best meets your needs. Laptop screens have diagonals varying from 11 inches up to 18 inches. The choice of the ideal size will be mainly dictated by your level of mobility and the degree of visual comfort desired.

In mobile use, preference should be given to screen sizes less than or equal to 14 inches. For “standard” use mainly at home, we generally recommend a screen diagonal of 15 inches.

Finally, for mainly static use and for maximum visual comfort, it is necessary to turn to screen sizes of 17 inches and more. However, computers with screens of these dimensions are relatively heavy and bulky.

Laptop screen size vs the screen resolution?

Screen resolution is the amount of pixels your screen is capable of displaying. The higher the quantity of pixels, the finer the image and therefore the more pleasing to the eye. Resolution is expressed in the number of horizontal pixels x the number of vertical pixels. Example: 1920 x 1080 pixels, or 2,073,600 pixels!

The screen definitions are generally standardized. Here are the most common:

HD: 1366 x 768 pixels

This is the most popular resolution among entry-level laptops. It is mainly found on slabs up to 15 inches.

In 2019, this resolution tends to get outdated due to its low pixel count. When you display a web page for example, the vertical space is rather limited, which means that you have to use your mouse wheel much more. In addition, this resolution causes a visual sensation of “suffocation”.

HD+: 1600 x 900 pixels

Initially designed for entry-level 17-inch laptops , the HD + definition is 1600 x 900 pixels . This resolution was proposed to reduce manufacturing costs. That said in 2019 it is better to turn to a Full HD screen at least (see below).

In addition, this is the minimum recommended screen resolution to achieve acceptable visual comfort without everything looking cramped on the screen.

Full HD: 1920 x 1080 pixels

This is the most popular resolution. Full HD offers a screen definition of 1920 x 1080 pixels and it is available on all screen sizes between 11 and 18 inches.

On screens smaller than 15 inches, you may need to scale the display if you don’t want items to appear too small. Otherwise you will have to have your nose glued to your screen, which will tire your eyesight.

In 2019, most computers offer this resolution. This is the one we recommend at a minimum.

QHD (2K) : 2560 x 1440 pixels

The acronym QHD stands for “Quad High Definition”. In human language understand “Four times the HD resolution 1280 x 720”.

This resolution offers higher display fineness than Full HD and is mostly found on high-end 13-inch computers.

It offers excellent visual comfort, but if you are watching Full HD movies, the screen will need to be scaled, which may give the impression of somewhat reduced sharpness. However, this is hardly noticeable if one is not glued directly to the screen.

QHD+: 3200 x 1800 pixels

Before the arrival of 4K which is starting to democratize, the highest definition available was QHD + (16: 9). It displays 3200 x 1800 pixels, or four times the HD + resolution (1600 x 900 pixels).

However, if you have the option of going straight to 4K in 2019, we recommend that you take the plunge.

UHD (4K): 3840 x 2160 pixels

Ultra HD, or even 4K, is 4 times the Full HD resolution! its impressive definition of 3840 x 2160 pixels cannot distinguish the pixels with the naked eye. This is the highest resolution available today.

This screen definition tends to generalize to become the new standard as Full HD was until now. Since this resolution is a multiple of 2 of Full HD, scaling up doesn’t cause visual blurring. To put it simply, 1 Full HD pixel = 4 4K pixels arranged in a square.

The disadvantages of such a resolution are mainly the much higher cost and also higher battery consumption.

If you have the budget, go for it! It is the forward-looking resolution. In 2019, many smartphones and other electronic devices are capable of filming in 4K. In addition, more and more videos are offered in 4K, especially on YouTube .

IPS or TN, which type of panel to choose?

Currently, the two most popular types of slabs are IPS and TN. Often offered for low-cost PCs or for gamers, TN panels are more economical. Their main drawback is a more limited field of vision and the screen tends to darken if you look at it too much from the side.

Their main advantage is their “speed” of refreshment. This minimizes drag effects like for example when you move your mouse (admit, you just moved your mouse to see!).

IPS displays have a higher perceived quality. Their viewing angles are wide (around 178 °) and they are the allies of graphic designers! They don’t get dark when you look at them a little from the side.

If you are not a “pro gamer”, we recommend taking an IPS screen if possible, which is much more visually comfortable.

Matte or glossy screen, which is better?

Visually more flattering, glossy screens are much more prone to glare. If you’ve ever worked with a window behind your back in daylight, you probably know what I’m talking about! In bright conditions, this type of screen can quickly turn into a mirror.

Glossy screens are the most common, and it will be an almost obligatory passage if in addition your screen is touch-sensitive.

The matt screen often has an anti-glare treatment. Graphic designers prefer it and offer a much different visual experience. In the end, the choice will be made according to your preferences, or quite simply by default because very often you will not have the choice for a particular computer model.

I am a gamer, what type of screen is most suitable?

It’s an open secret among video game enthusiasts, the king screen is the TN and with high refresh rates.

Manufacturers know this so well that they offer it in most cases for their so-called “gamer” models.

Touch screen or non-touchscreen?

More and more, applications are designed for touch and this type of screen tends to become widespread. Touch is particularly useful on small screens (up to 13 inches), and even more so if your screen is rotatable 360 °.

The major drawback is of course the fingerprints which are found very quickly over the entire surface of the screen and which are unsightly. We suggest that you always have a cloth with cleaning spray on hand.

The tactile experience is worth it though. you quickly get used to it and you can also use a touch pen. We like to be able to pause a video just by touching the screen for example, or to use the calculator with his fingers rather than the keyboard or the mouse! It’s still much more practical!

The laptops are available in several screen sizes. These are between 11 inches and 17 inches for the larger models. If you have particular use of your laptop PC, you will need to adapt the screen size to your needs. Inmac presents the different screen models and their main uses on this page.

Buy a laptop with an 11-inch screen

Welcome to the world of small laptops. Easily transportable and despite everything powerful, laptops with an 11-inch screen are quite suitable for certain uses.

If you cannot hope to write a dissertation of hundreds of pages on this computer, due to the small size of its screen and its keyboard, you can, on the other hand, navigate serenely on the Internet, play online and, why not, present products to your customers.

A laptop PC with an 11-inch screen looks great. Some models have the basic equipment for office and multimedia use, while others are true powerful laptops with:

  • i5 processor;
  • 8 GB of RAM;
  • 256 GB of SSD storage;
  • Windows 10 pro.

Choosing a laptop PC with a 13-inch screen model

If you prefer a larger screen for surfing the internet and writing and want a portable PC that’s light and easy to carry, go for a laptop with a 13-inch screen.

Less expensive than a 14-inch or 17-inch laptop, this PC will accompany you wherever you go. Its small size allows it to slip into a backpack.

Manufacturers of 13 – inch laptops are now installing very high-definition screens, like Apple ‘s models that are equipped with Retina screens.

The 13-inch OLED display panels installed on some portable models are notable for rendering blacks, perfect for watching movies and videos.

14-inch laptop

Mid-size and more comfortable than a 13-inch laptop, the 14-inch laptop is a quality alternative solution for those looking for a laptop that is both powerful and easily transportable.

Laptop PC with 14 inch screen size is less common than 15 inch PC. However, it is now declined by most computer brands who have understood the need to have a range of computers that are easier to slip into a bag than a 15-inch laptop.

Component side, 14-inch laptops have nothing to envy their elders since they include, for the most powerful models, an i5 processor, 16 GB RAM and a 256 GB storage capacity disk.

They are priced between that of a 13-inch laptop and a 15-inch laptop. It is good to note that the difference is not so marked today any more because of technological progress and the current harmony of the internal components installed in these PCs.

Best-selling laptop: the 15-inch laptop

We are entering the best-selling line of laptops: 15-inch laptops .

The main brands of 15 inch laptops are:

  • Asus,
  • Acer,
  • Dell,
  • HP,
  • Lenovo,
  • Toshiba.

All of these laptops represent the majority of sales of computers of this type.

The size of this screen is very pleasant and can be used for all purposes, such as gaming or photo editing.

On the Inmac website, you will find 15-inch laptops from the brands Asus, Acer, Dell, HP, Lenovo or Toshiba. Each manufacturer declines its laptop PC models by series or range, such as HP EliteBook or Lenovo ThinkPad.

Depending on your needs, you may opt for a more or less equipped laptop, but we recommend that you choose a 15-inch laptop that is powerful enough to keep it as long as possible. .

Some 15-inch laptops have a touch screen detachable from the keyboard. It can then be used as a classic tablet, which is very convenient for browsing the internet or playing online.

Also note that it is prudent to anticipate the size of the SSD or HDD hard drive and to plan for a storage capacity greater than what you currently use. Finally, take a look at the connections available on the 15-inch laptop. Check the number of USB ports that are never too many and the possibility of plugging in other peripherals if necessary.

Buy a 17-inch laptop

As a professional or a fan of gaming, choose a 17-inch laptop PC. It doesn’t have to be much more expensive than a 15-inch laptop. Its screen is more comfortable and allows you to work long hours without fatigue.

Inmac store recommends that you purchase a 17 inch laptop PC if you have professional use of your machine. The 17-inch models are just as powerful as desktops, plus the ability to work anywhere ?!

A 17-inch laptop is of course less suitable for transport than a computer with a smaller screen. Although heavier than the other models, its working comfort is still worth the extra weight and a little more space.
